Please note: Today’s program originally aired June 7, 2006.

How can you help a fellow homeschooler in need? Mike Smith shares the story of how one dad put his desire to help into action, on today’s Home School Heartbeat.

Mike Smith:
In 1999, a father learned of the death of a fellow homeschooling dad. Knowing that the man’s wife and children would be under tremendous pressure to stop homeschooling in the wake of the traumatic event, the father decided to establish a fund to assist widows with the financial cost of remaining home to teach their children.

He presented his idea to the Home School Foundation, and we caught the vision. Since 2000, the Foundation has helped over 500 families who have experienced the death of a spouse.

For families living with the loss of a spouse and parent, encouragement is the biggest need. After receiving a gift check, one widow wrote to us, “Thank you for blessing my family, encouraging my heart, lifting my faith, and reminding me that in ALL things, God’s grace is sufficient. Thank you for helping to lighten the load.” Another wrote, “The generosity shown by HSF supporters is overwhelming to me.”

What a wonderful picture of how the generosity of one person can impact so many! Through one father’s vision for serving the homeschool community, a new fund was launched. And through the continued sacrificial giving of individual donors, the Foundation is offering help and hope to more and more homeschool families in need.

And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
