Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on July 20, 2006.

If your goal is to teach your children about Christ whenever possible, you’ll discover that each day is full of possibilities. Today, HSLDA President Mike Smith discusses that idea with a fellow homeschool dad.

Mike Smith:
Ken, homeschooling allows families to live out their daily lives side by side. How does this provide opportunities for you to disciple your four children?

Ken Schuenemeyer:
Well, one of the things that it does is that homeschooling gives me time to see them in their everyday settings and under circumstances that normally I wouldn’t have opportunities to do that. One example would be—I teach literature with another dad (Western literature)—and one of the more recent books that we finished was The Old Man and the Sea (as you might know, the Pulitzer Prize winner). And the values that they teach in that particular secular book—what we do is we take those values and we balance those up against Scripture. And that allows our children to take a look at that and to measure them.

Additionally, I think one of the most important and meaningful opportunities that we’ve had recently as a family is going on a family missions trip to Mexico. As a family this past summer we agreed to give our Christmas away, and so we went down to Cofradia to minister with the missionaries down there. And we found that very stressful but very rewarding. What a valuable time that was.

Mike:
Thank you for sharing that, Ken. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
