Mapmaking: How to Write a Mission Statement
Volume 93, Program 13
11/4/2009
Listen Now

Sometimes, the trickiest part of having good intentions is sticking to them. How can you, as a homeschool parent, be intentional about your ministry to your children? Today on Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith, author Andrea Soldini shares some practical advice.

Mike Smith:
Today, Andrea joins us to discuss how she and her husband used mission statements to keep their homeschooling ministry in perspective. I’m glad to have you with us on the program, Andrea.

Andrea Soldini:
Thank you, Mike, it’s a pleasure to speak with you!

Mike:
On our last program, your husband explained why your family wrote a mission statement and goals. How often did you do this?

Andrea:
We re-evaluate our mission statement and goals each year prior to the new school year.

Mike:
Well, can you explain to our listeners how they can write goals for themselves?

Andrea:
Absolutely! First, seek God for His direction for your family. Find out where God wants your family to focus this year. We use a verse or area of scripture as a basis for our mission statement.

Once a mission statement is crafted, develop goals for all areas of your family life, including spiritual, educational, financial, physical, and ministry. Use your mission statement as a filter to see if the goals line up with it. If they don’t, then put them on hold. When they do, you can move forward in confidence.

Lastly, create a schedule to see if you can realistically fit your goals into your life. Sometimes there are a few more that will have to wait, while others take precedence.

Mike:
Thank you, Andrea, for that good advice for homeschool parents. Join us next time for more on how to use mission statements and goals in your homeschooling. And until then, I’m Mike Smith.
