Does a cloud of eraser dust, math worksheets, and research projects fog the vision you once had for homeschooling? Today on Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith, author Jason Soldini explains how a family mission statement can help keep things in perspective.

Mike Smith:
Jason, on our last program, you explained why homeschooling is a ministry. Homeschooling can have a tremendous impact on children obviously. Let’s talk about how to keep our children’s education in focus. Why did your family decide to write a mission statement and goals?

Jason Soldini:
Well, we decided to write out a mission statement and develop goals for two main reasons. First, the exercise requires us to seek out direction from the Lord. We want to be going the direction that He has for us, especially as it relates to our children’s education. If we see activities or opportunities that don’t line up, or fit in our God-given mission, we have the freedom to say no, no matter how good they look, or how important they seem.

The other reason would be for accountability. When we have taken the time to write out goals that do line up with our mission, we know what we should be doing and can work to achieve those things. Our goals include educational, spiritual, financial, physical, ministry, and others that help to provide a picture of where we want to be.

We then use a schedule to ensure we can realistically accomplish these goals. Sometimes we can’t, and a particular goal is left out. The process has helped our family educate with purpose and realistic expectations.

Mike:
Jason, I could not agree with you more! Mission statements are such a great tool for homeschooling families! Thank you for sharing that today. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
