Do you have a budding marine biologist gazing at the fish tank in your living room? Learn how to encourage that interest in your child! Today on Home School Heartbeat, marine biologist Sherri Seligson joins host Mike Farris to explain options for study and work in her field.

Mike Farris:
Sherri, let’s wrap up this week with some advice for parents of a child who’s really interested in marine biology. Are there any defining characteristics of a good biologist? What sort of studies and careers could that child be looking into?

Sherri Seligson:
One non-academic characteristic I like to see is a student who does not have a problem getting his hands into squishy things. Contrary to what most people think, most marine biologists do not spend their days touring in a boat with the wind in their hair, watching dolphins leap out of the water. I would often come home smelling of fish, with squid ink under my nails.

Also, I would be looking for a student who enjoys learning about God’s amazing creation and how all of its wonders give glory to Him. Academically, they should enjoy not only the biological sciences but also scientific principles like chemistry, math, and physics; as well as how the many environments of the world are specially designed.

Careers include working in zoos and aquariums, fishery management, studying the ocean floor for resources, such as mining and oil reserves, environmental stewardship and management, even education and recreation. Mike, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about our own ocean floors. There is just so much to study in this field—it’s really exciting.

Mike:
Sherri, thank you very much for joining us all week! I’m Mike Farris.
