Charles Darwin may not have realized it, but the evidence of God’s creative power was swimming under the HMS Beagle during Darwin’s formative voyage! Today’s Home School Heartbeat guest joins host Mike Farris to explain marine biology support for creation.

Mike Farris:
My guest again today is Sherri Seligson, who’s a marine biologist and the author of a high school course for Apologia. Sherri, often we think of biology as a stronghold of evolutionary thought—but you see it as a great evidence of creation. Can you give us an overview of how marine biology points to God as the creator?

Sherri Seligson:
Sure! The saltiness of the ocean is a good place to begin. The oceans are getting saltier and saltier each year. Because the mechanisms that add salt to the ocean, like runoff from land, river flow and volcanic eruptions are much more plentiful than those that remove salt. Scientists have been able to monitor the rate at which the oceans increase their saltiness and by taking this rate back in time, we see that the earth could not possibly be old enough to support the Darwinian evolution described today.

We also find in the ocean what we call “living fossils.” Organisms today which look identical to fossils found in earth’s layers that are supposed to be billions of years old. And these guys haven’t evolved? They should have! During the hypothesized drastic climate changes the earth is thought to have experienced over supposed millennia.

Finally there are several marine examples of something called obligate symbiosis. That’s where two organisms of different species have to live together in order to survive. These are just some of the many examples that are a stumbling block to evolutionary theory.

Mike:
Sherri, that’s really exciting. I’m amazed by that! Thanks so much for joining us. I’m Mike Farris.
