Mike Farris:
Sherri Seligson, a marine biologist and homeschooling mom, joins me this week. Sherri, welcome to the program!

Sherri Seligson:
I’m glad to be here Mike!

Mike:
Sherri, you have an interesting background—you originally worked as a hands-on marine biologist who collected and maintained coral reef animals. Tell us about marine biology. What is it? And when would it be appropriate for homeschool kids to start studying marine biology?

Sherri:
Marine biology spans several occupations, including working with aquarium environments, as I did. As well as conservation and beach erosion efforts, exploration of oil reserves, population studies for fisheries, even dolphin research to aid in the education of special needs children. Really, it’s just any field of study which involves living things and their ocean environment.

Because the ocean covers over 75 percent of our world affecting everything from our weather to the oxygen levels in our atmosphere and providing energy resources, medicines, and foods, I think it’s beneficial for students have at least a general understanding of its amazing secrets—at least the middle school or high school level course of study. Personally, I wish everyone could have college level study in this field, but I’m a little biased!
