One of the benefits of homeschooling is that you as a teacher know your child better than anyone else. But letting your high school student experience other teaching styles could also be beneficial! Hear more, today on Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
Dan Beasley, a homeschool graduate, joins us today to discuss his dual enrollment experience. Dan, welcome to the program!

Dan Beasley:
Thank you! It’s a pleasure to be here!

Mike:
Dan, what classes did you take through dual enrollment?

Dan:
I took a couple English classes as well as a chemistry class from a local community college.

Mike:
Did you find that those professors structured the classes differently than you had experienced at home? Do you feel this was helpful?

Dan:
I did find the classroom structure different than what I was used to at home. I think the biggest difference was simply the formality. There were more students; most of them I didn’t know, coming from a variety of backgrounds, so the structure was more rigid.

I do think I benefited in several ways from this more formal setting. One, it caused me to take more pride in my work. I knew people outside my immediate family would be reviewing and critiquing my assignments, and this motivated me to put a little more effort into it. I also feel the fixed schedule helped combat the urge to procrastinate. It forced me to focus, which also ultimately led to me learning more.

While I loved the flexibility and wholesome atmosphere of being at home, I think taking a few classes in a more structured, formal environment was an excellent experience for me.

Mike:
Well Dan, thanks for sharing that experience with us. I’m sure it will be helpful to many families listening today. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
