You might think that dual enrollment mean handing your student’s education to another teacher. But those classroom experiences can be a great teaching opportunity for you! Today on Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith, learn about staying involved in your student’s dual enrollment.

Mike Smith:
HSLDA High School Coordinator Becky Cooke joins me again today. Becky, dual enrollment courses at a local college can be a great opportunity for parents to help their student transition to the next stage of life. How can a parent stay involved and help the student cultivate maturity through this experience?

Becky Cooke:
That’s a good question, Mike. Dual enrollment may actually help to motivate teens whose enthusiasm for learning is lagging. These classes can stimulate their thinking. It’ll also be an opportunity for teens to learn how to react appropriately to group dynamics when working together to produce a project.

Now from a practical standpoint, parents will be able to help their children learn how to choose courses wisely each semester. Also then, while children are at home, parents will be on the spot to help discern truth from untruth in the material being studied. There’ll be time to hone your children’s articulation of their worldviews, so they will have confidence in responding to teachers and classmates. This training, Mike, is paramount in preparing children for going from the home to all post-high school environments.

Mike:
Becky, I could not agree with you more. Thanks for joining us again! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
