Who were the fathers of freedom? Do you—and your children—know the brave men who sacrificed to bring liberty to our nation? Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith visits with a guest who wants to introduce you to the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Mike Smith:
This week, I’m joined by author, speaker, and veteran homeschool mom, Marilyn Boyer. Marilyn, welcome to the program!
Marilyn Boyer:
Thanks, Mike, it’s an honor to be with you.
Mike:
You’ve just published a new book about the signers of the Declaration of Independence, entitled For You They Signed. Why do you feel it’s important for people to learn about the signers of the Declaration?
Marilyn:
Mike, a huge chunk of our history, which actually is Christian in nature, has been carved out from our public school classrooms. And God used that fact to challenge me to begin researching the lives of these men. When I did, I was just astounded by what I found. The vast majority of these men were true Christians. They were looking daily to their Savior for guidance and direction in the events which led up to the signing. You know, many of the signers in their last will and testament, actually wrote doctrinal statements about what they believed in Jesus Christ. I was just astounded. The Founders were prolific writers, and they made their testimonies clear. And I believe it’s crucial that we teach our children to be able to substantiate the Christian founding of our nation in order to protect our freedoms that we now enjoy in America.
Mike:
Marilyn, thanks for your passion about these men and the important part of our history! We’ll talk more on our next program. And until then, I’m Mike Smith.
