You might have an annual evaluation with your employer, but have you considered having one with your kids? One mom talks about how her family began doing just that—on today’s Home School Heartbeat, with HSLDA President Mike Smith.
Mike Smith:
Chris Tigges, a homeschooling mom, joins me this week to talk about how her family began having a year-end review with the children. Chris, what might this practically look like? How did you prepare? And what sort of questions did you ask your children?
Chris Tigges:
Well after the results from the children’s surveys were downloaded and printed, we formulated our questions. These questions were just not about school, though—they were about life as a whole.
We asked the children, “What went well this past year? What can we improve upon? Is there anything you’ve always wanted to learn more about? And how are your relationships with other family members?”
We would then present the results of the strengthsfinder survey and ask, “Do you think these strengths reflect your talents and abilities? And if so, what can we do to help resource and encourage you to grow in these strengths?” From this discussion, we would devise a specific plan for each child for the next year. We had no idea how eye-opening the discussion would be.
Mike:
Chris, this could be a great experience for homeschooling parents all over this world! Thanks for sharing your family’s experience with us! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
