If the thought of a year-end evaluation makes you shudder, think again. Make that evaluation a positive, up-building experience for your children! Homeschool mom Chris Tigges explains how, today on Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith.
Mike Smith:
Chris, you began telling us on the last program about how you and your husband, Jon, conduct your year-end review with your children. Have you found any helpful resources to facilitate that discussion?
Chris Tigges:
We have. You know, biblically, the Lord tells us to put our talents to good work. My husband Jon was in the middle of a career change and was reassessing his own giftings. He believed an assessment tool from strengthsfinder.com would help us all gain better clarity in determining our gifts. We purchased a Clifton Youth Strengths Explorer workbook online for each of the kids 14 and younger, and then purchased the book Strengthsfinder 2.0 for our 16- and 18-year-olds. The book gives an access code to take a survey online at strengthsfinder.com. You then simply download and print the results.
Examples of some of the strengths from the youth assessment were dependability, relating, and organizer. From the adult version for our older children, an example of one of our teenage boys’ strengths were competition, strategic, futuristic, and an activator. We gathered and discussed the results and prepared for the next Sunday afternoon when we would individually discuss the results with the children.
Mike:
That’s great, Chris—thanks for sharing these ideas with our listeners! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
