The Influence of a Mother
Volume 89, Program 21
5/4/2009
Listen Now

When you think of influential people, homeschooling moms might be the last to come to mind. But today on Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Farris reveals the power of a godly mother.

Mike Farris:
The feminist movement strives for power for essentially self-centered purposes. A mother’s power is premised on the opposite of selfishness, as she continually sacrifices for the good of her children.

Ultimately, power is the ability to influence the decisions and actions of other people. Few people will be willing to follow a leader committed to selfishness. We are willingly guided by a person who genuinely loves us. Godly mothers will always have greater influence than feminists because sacrificial love is more trustworthy than selfishness.

This week, several homeschooled students and graduates of various ages join me to honor homeschooling mothers. Today Emma is in the studio with me. Emma, how long has your mother homeschooled you?

Emma:
About four years, maybe less.

Mike:
Are you glad that your mom homeschools you?

Emma:
Yes.

Mike:
Do you learning anything in homeschooling?

Emma:
We do Bible time and we memorize verses.

Mike:
And what else do you do?

Emma:
Reading, science, history, writing, math, grammar.

Mike:
What’s your most important, favorite science thing you’ve ever learned?

Emma:
Probably that helicopter thing, where you fold it like a paper airplane, and then you drop it off a high spot, and it twirls like a helicopter.

Mike:
Did your mother teach you how to do that?

Emma:
Yep, it’s in the science book.

Mike:
Okay. Well, I thank God for your mom in particular doing such a great job with you. Thank you for joining us today. I’m Mike Farris.
