If your high school student is looking for a way to finance his college education and gain valuable training, the National Guard might be a great fit for him. Today on Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith, Chaplain Paul Douglas explains the options to make a National Guard experience fit your plans.

Mike Smith:
On our last program, we talked about a streamlined enlistment policy that the National Guard adopted for homeschool graduates. Today Chaplain Paul Douglas, a National Guard recruiter, joins us again. Chaplain Douglas, what are the enlistment options for the Army National Guard?

Chaplain Paul Douglas:
If a homeschooled student wants to come into the Army National Guard, there are some tremendous opportunities. There’s the Active First option. They would incur a two-year active duty service obligation, there would be a sizable enlistment bonus with that, they could go active duty, and then come to the Guard after their two-year initial enlistment.

There’s the College First option for seniors. Come into the Army National Guard and not be deployed or encumbered in any way for up to two years, be able to focus on college, and get a pretty good sized enlistment bonus as a result of that program as well.

There’s the Guaranteed Reserve Forces scholarship, that’s ideal for homeschoolers that are already in college, that want to get financial assistance in their sophomore and their junior years. This ROTC scholarship is 100% paid tuition, books.

And there’s also the split option, which is available to juniors and seniors that can come into the Guard, finish their high school requirements, and still be in the Guards.

Mike:
Well, thanks for bringing this valuable information to us today. This could help a lot of homeschooled young people serve their country. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
