Do you have a son or daughter considering what to do after high school graduation? This week on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith and Chaplain Paul Douglas offer a suggestion you may not have thought about: the opportunity to serve our country in the National Guard. Mike Smith: Chaplain Paul Douglas: I’d like to take a moment just to say, Colonel Mike Jones has really been instrumental and a driving force. He’s a homeschool father, as well as myself, and he’s been terrific in pushing this and helping the policy piece go through, particularly with our new program, called the Homeschool Path to Honor. We took a confusing set of guidelines that governed the enlistment of homeschoolers, and we organized the program in such as a way as to make it easier for enlisted recruiters to bring homeschoolers into the guard. The National Guard recognizes the fact that homeschoolers bring some great skills to the table, so we built the Army National Guard Homeschool Path to Honor. It can be accessed by going to 1-800-Go-Guard.com, and just clicking on the icon that says “Your path to honor as a homeschooler.” It’s a terrific program, and we hope that a lot of homeschool parents will take advantage of it by directing their students that way.
