Being prepared is half the battle! For your high schooler, test prep can be the key to victory as he faces those important college entrance exams. Find out more from HSLDA President Mike Smith and his guest, today on Home School Heartbeat.

Mike Smith:
This week, Becky Cooke, one of HSLDA’s high school coordinators, is joining me to talk about the college entrance exams that your high schooler needs to take. Becky, we’ve got parents all set to choose a college entrance test and register their student. Now what? How should students prepare for test-taking?

Becky Cooke:
This is a good question, Mike, because preparation is crucial to successfully navigating through these tests. I strongly urge parents not to have their children take these tests without preparation. So let me give you some of the many resources available for test prep. The local bookstores have shelves of helpful books. There are CD-ROM programs—in fact, on our high school website, we have an excellent SAT/ACT Prep CD that homeschool parents can order by just paying the shipping and handling fee.

On the other hand, parents may choose to hire an SAT or ACT tutor who will work one-on-one with their child to prepare for the test. Classes are frequently offered in communities by such companies as Kaplan, Princeton Review, and others.

Other resources for preparation can be found on the College Board and ACT websites. In the testing section of our website, we also list a number of prep course providers.

So, as you can see, Mike, families have many options for preparing their students to take these tests.

Mike:
Becky, that’s great advice! Thanks for sharing that information with our listeners! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
