Homeschooling and Single Parents
Listen Now
Volume 87, Program 32
Airdate: Tuesday, February 10, 2009
Originally Aired: Tuesday, May 1, 2007

Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on May 1, 2007.

For a single parent, homeschooling while providing for a family often adds up to one thing—sacrifice. Is it worth it? One mom who’s been there gives her answer to that question, on today’s Home School Heartbeat with Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
Liz, people are sometimes quick to point out the challenges of homeschooling as a single parent. But let’s look at the positives—what benefits does homeschooling offer to a single-parent household?

Liz Curry:
When you homeschool as a single parent, you have the benefit of some stability. I was a mother that—I had some financial difficulties, so I tended to have to move—landlords changed, expenses rose. And so when I was homeschooling, my children didn’t have to change schools and they didn’t have to deal with negative peer pressure. The other thing is, when you’re training your children, you don’t have to deal with someone else’s values; your children are learning your values. And that takes a lot of tension out of the home.

Mike:
Liz, did your relatives believe you could do this?

Liz:
Yes, my family was supportive of me. At first they wondered what was I doing, what was I thinking about, and I told them that I felt like I really needed to do this. And then I found out I was going to have to do this as a single parent, and I just incorporated my family, my friends, the church, different people, to assist me in helping me to homeschool my children. And it worked out.

Mike:
Well, Liz, that’s tremendously encouraging. And listeners, thank you for joining us today. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
