Have you ever faced unjust attacks on your character? Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas joins Mike Farris on today’s Home School Heartbeat to discuss what he learned form his senate confirmation hearing experience.
Farris:
Justice Thomas, for me, the most compelling part of your book, My Grandfather’s Son, was the story of the unprincipled and libelous attacks that the secular left unleashed when you were nominated for the Supreme Court. My question to you is how in the world did you survive?
Justice Thomas:
You know I used to pass a little church right after I came onto court. It had this wonderful sign out front. It said, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” And I would have to say my wife and I, Virginia, we were together and it was faith. It was prayer, our prayer partners. Good people like Senator Danforth. So I would say that that was just absolutely critical.
Farris:
Unfortunately, we know that others are going to face these same kind of attacks. What advice do you have for our listeners when they hear attacks against someone they would otherwise trust?
Justice Thomas:
I think that people should just look who is making the attack. Consider the source. Is it someone who has motivation or goals that suggest that they would say negative things about a person? I’d also say, ask people, just simply ask a basic question if you were in that position and the shoe was on the other foot, how would you like people to think of you? Do you want them to immediately believe the negative about you or as my grandfather used to say, do you want them to give you the benefit of the doubt?
Farris:
Thanks so much Justice Thomas. I’m Mike Farris.
