“We all need somebody to lean on,” goes the old song. If you’re wondering where to turn, stay tuned to today’s Home School Heartbeat, as Zan Tyler and HSLDA President Mike Smith offer resources for finding encouragement.
Mike Smith:
Zan, on our last program, you talked about some of the major struggles homeschooling moms face. What can moms do to find the encouragement they need to get through it?
Zan Tyler:
Mike, as homeschooling moms, I think we need to intentionally work on building a powerful support system that encourages us, equips us, and inspires us.
I think there are four things that every mom can do in this regard. First, we must seek God with our whole heart, and make it a priority every day to spend time in His word and in prayer. If we don’t keep ourselves nourished spiritually, then we can’t fulfill Jesus’ command in John 21, to tend and feed His lambs. As Mike Farris has often said, moms, there’s a whole spiritual side of learning to depend on God and overcoming discouragement. There’s no human answer to it.
Secondly, I think we need to pay attention to and invest in our marriages. We need to keep them strong.
Thirdly, we need to educate ourselves. And we’ll talk about that more in detail tomorrow.
And fourthly, we need to surround ourselves with supportive people who comfort us and inspire us. This is important to remember in this age of virtual reality. We can join a support group, attend conferences, find an older mom who can serve as a mentor, and if you aren’t already, please becomes active in a Bible-believing church.
Mike:
Zan, that’s great advice! Thanks for passing that on to our listeners today. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
