Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on February 28, 2007. Not everyone serves his or her country on the front lines. HSLDA President Mike Smith shares a suggestion for families who want to serve America here at home, on today’s Home School Heartbeat. Mike Smith: Chances are you know at least one family whose son or daughter has been deployed. Ask if you and your children could correspond with the deployed soldier, or send some necessities in a care package. And remember that prayer is sometimes the best encouragement a soldier’s family can receive. If you know a family with a deployed spouse or parent, you have a special opportunity to serve those who are faithfully defending our freedoms. Take some time to think, pray, and discuss with your children how you can reach out to this family. You may want to help out with babysitting, homeschooling, or getting through the holidays. Perhaps you could set up regular play dates with the other family’s children, to allow the parent to get things done around the house or run errands. Ask what would especially bless the children during holidays such as Easter or Independence Day, when family togetherness and traditions are so important. By including your family in this service, you can help them see that most worthwhile actions require sacrifice. And just as our troops make sacrifices every day to serve our country, we can sacrifice to serve our fellow citizens. That’s an invaluable lesson in freedom. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith. |
