Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on February 26, 2007. Journalist Elmer Davis once said, “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.” On this week’s Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith talks about how you can teach that vital lesson in your homeschool. Mike Smith: It’s imperative that we ourselves understand—and teach our children to understand—what it is that keeps America free. This week, I’d like to suggest some simple ways to incorporate the lessons of freedom into your homeschool program. Start with something easy—writing a letter to a soldier. If your family doesn’t personally know anyone serving overseas, there are many patriotic organizations that can find a recipient for your letters. It may not be possible for the soldier to write back, but your words of encouragement will be treasured. Remember to include a heartfelt thank-you for the soldier’s service, and don’t forget to handwrite your signature. Even children just learning to write can participate in this project, giving them the chance to connect with the troops halfway around the world. Other family projects could include sending a care package or conducting a used cell phone drive. Look for more ideas on websites such as AmericaSupportsYou.com, which has a section called “Kids Take Action” with ideas for supporting our troops. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith. |
