Families that are homeschooling special needs children face many battles—but one you may not have considered is the financial cost. On today’s Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith, hear about the Home School Foundation’s heart for these families.
Mike Smith:
Chuck, the number of families who believe homeschooling is the best choice for their children with special needs has been growing. What is the Home School Foundation doing to help these families?
Chuck Hurst:
In 2001, the Foundation started the Special Needs Children’s Fund to assist families with the high cost of special education. Our heart goes out to these families who want to give their children a loving environment, free from peer pressure and name calling, but find the costs prohibitive.
Here’s an excerpt from a letter written by one of the many families we’ve been able to help this year.
I first must say a very heartfelt “Thank you” for the grant you sent me. I never expected a check to be in that envelope! Someone cared about my grandson and me and was actually helping us. It’s been a long time since we’ve had anyone do that.
I am a single grandmother with custody of my 10-year-old special needs grandson, Phillip. He has had a hard time in his 10 short years and has a lot of difficulties.
With the money from the Foundation, we were able to pay for internet service and get a complete phonics curriculum. It is really helping Phillip with his education. Your very generous grant has helped make teaching Phillip so much easier.
Thank you all so much!
Mike:
On behalf of the Home School Foundation, we count it a joy to serve families like this. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
