The Bible contains many admonitions to care for widows. Even with the advent of Social Security and life insurance, that’s not an outdated command! On today’s Home School Heartbeat with HSLDA President Mike Smith, hear how the Home School Foundation is providing an avenue to meet real and present needs.
Mike Smith:
Chuck Hurst, the executive director of the Home School Foundation, is my guest today. Chuck, the first fund set up by the Foundation was initiated by one donor—a homeschooling father with a burden to assist homeschooling moms who had been widowed. Today, many donors share the vision of the Widows Scholarship Fund. Tell our listeners what this fund does.
Chuck Hurst:
Our Widows Fund provides resources for widows to continue homeschooling. This year alone, we have already assisted 244 widows with grants to help them keep on homeschooling. Here is a testimony from one widow:
My husband died in 1997. My children were one-and-a-half years and nine weeks old at the time. I have been receiving survivor’s benefits through Social Security as my income since that time.
My husband and I spoke about homeschooling and planned to homeschool our children. When he died unexpectedly, I didn’t know if homeschooling would still be possible. Ever since I began homeschooling in 2000, HSLDA and HSF have been there, offering assistance.
What a great help and encouragement you have been and continue to be to me. Not only is this ministry practical and beneficial, it has given me the opportunity to witness to non-homeschoolers about the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness.
Mike:
Thank you for joining me today to help tell her story. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
