Defining Tradition
Listen Now
Volume 86, Program 27
Airdate: Tuesday, December 16, 2008
Originally Aired: Tuesday, July 6, 2004

Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on July 6, 2004.

What’s the difference between a habit and a tradition? Join Michael Farris as he and Noël Piper talk about traditions that lead to worship, today on Home School Heartbeat.

Mike Farris:
Noël, how would you define a tradition?

Noël Piper:
My definition for a Christian would be that tradition is laying up God’s words in our own heart, and then passing His words on to the next generation. And I get that idea from Deuteronomy 11, where God says that real specifically to the people: “Lay up my words in your heart.” He goes over all the things that He’s done, what they know about Him, and after that, then He gets to the point of saying, “Then teach my words to your children when you’re walking in the way and lying down and standing up and all the most regular parts of your day.” So I think even those very regular, everyday things are very much tradition, if we are filling them with God’s word in our awareness of His being there and being the explanation behind everything we talk about.

Mike:
Can you give us one example of how you do that?

Noël:
My daughter this morning asked me a question about her birth mother—our adopted daughter. And I went straight to Scripture to talk about God placing the fatherless in homes and God giving every one of us the home that we have, whether we were born into it or adopted into it.

Mike:
Noël, I want to thank you for encouraging families to focus their time on their most treasured possession, which is the Lord Himself as He’s revealed Himself in His word. I’m Mike Farris.

Program Offer

Only God can bequeath God to our children. Only God can give our children a taste for his sweetness and awaken them to his worth. But he uses human means to do so—God-centered traditions, Bible-saturated family patterns, and grace-laden heirlooms. Year in and year out, traditions show your children that God is our treasure. In this book, Noël Piper opens her home to you, sharing biblically-rooted insights from her more than 30 years of marriage and child rearing. Come with her and enjoy this glimpse into how your family can learn to treasure God through traditions. Hardcover, 114 pages.
