Although homeschooling with a disability can be a challenge, it is worth the effort. HSLDA President Mike Smith offers ways to recognize the disguised blessings of disability, on today’s Home School Heartbeat.

Mike Smith:
Homeschooling is a big commitment, but it is also tremendously rewarding. For parents dealing with disability, some days may seem to contain only struggles. Here are some suggestions from a family that’s been through two decades of chronic illness for how to recognize your blessings on those hard days.

It might be hard to get out of the house for extra activities, but time spent at home can make your family closer. In the middle of a bad day, take the time to simply be together and appreciate one another.

Keep a journal of the specific ways that your struggles have brought blessing into your life—maybe a special moment with your child that happened because of your needs, or the love expressed by someone who dropped by to help.

When parents have a disabling condition, their children shoulder extra responsibility, but they also develop greater maturity. Look at how your children have learned to serve those in need through the experience of your family. Encourage joyful service, beginning at home.

Be a role model to others. Often, the best way to lift yourself out of discouragement is to shift your focus to someone else. Pray for others. If you can write letters or emails, undertake a ministry of encouragement. You will be blessed as well.

Whether you struggle with a disability or you know someone who does, join together with other homeschoolers to support and encourage one another. And may the Lord bless your homeschooling journey. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
