What is homeschooling really all about? According to the Home School Foundation, it’s about generosity. Find out what that means, on today’s Home School Heartbeat, with host Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
In 2004, homeschooling parents Todd and Elaine Bryant* evacuated their home when Hurricane Charley bore down on Florida.

“Will our home be destroyed?” their 6-year-old son asked. Elaine replied that she didn’t know. “That’s okay,” said her son. “God has a plan.”

When they returned home, the Bryants were amazed to find that their house was only missing the screens and one piece of siding. Yet the experience had left its mark. When Hurricane Katrina struck two years later, the Bryants knew the fear that families on the Gulf Coast were facing. So they made a financial gift to the Home School Foundation.

“We had a lot of empathy for those who did lose everything in the hurricanes,” says Elaine. “That prompted us to help the homeschoolers in this situation. It was an opportunity to turn some hard times for us into a blessing for other people.”

The Bryants exemplify the Home School Foundation’s motto: Giving is the heart of homeschooling. A ministry of Home School Legal Defense Association, the Home School Foundation’s mission is to serve as a conduit between families in need and those who desire to minister to them financially. This can make all the difference in whether a blind child obtains special Braille equipment, or a family successfully rebuilds after a hurricane.

And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
