How does homeschooling allow teens to rebel against the modern concept of “teenage rebellion”? On today’s Home School Heartbeat, Mike Farris continues his conversation with Alex Harris, co-founder of The Rebelution blog and conferences.
Mike Farris:
Alex, how did your homeschool background inspire you and Brett to start The Rebelution movement—and now, to write your first book?
Alex Harris:
Well, homeschooling really is very compatible with the whole message of The Rebelution. I know that our parents’ reasons in homeschooling us and many parents’ reasons in educating their children at home were based on the same idea of rebelling against low expectations and wanting to uphold a higher standard for the next generation. And what we really have found in starting The Rebelution, doing our conferences, writing our book, homeschooling has been such a benefit to us in multiple ways. One of the main ways is just giving us the flexibility to focus for a season on certain things. When we were younger, for a season we focused on music. For a season it was algebra. For a season it was speech and debate, and for these last few years it’s been The Rebelution. And what homeschooling has allowed us to do is to have that flexibility, to really focus and apply ourselves and to give our real best to what God had for us at that time. So homeschooling has been an incredible blessing to us and enabling us to do what we’re doing now.
Mike:
Just for the record, Alex, you and your brother were the two that talked Chuck Norris into supporting Mike Huckabee. I heard it myself on national television. Congratulations for all the things you’re doing. I’m Mike Farris.

Alex and Brett Harris are leading a movement of Christian teenagers to redefine the teen years. This book comes as a result of their popular blog and conferences encouraging their peers to resist the lies of today’s culture and media and begin to “do hard things” for God, for their parents, and for a stronger nation.
