What is the role of a homemaker? On this week’s Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith, we’ll hear from one homeschooling mom about the lessons she’s learned raising five boys.

Mike Smith:
Joining me this week is Denise Mira, a longtime homeschooling mother of five boys, ages 23 to 13, and author of No Ordinary Child: Unlocking the Leader Within Your Child. It’s great to have you on the program, Denise!

Denise Mira:
It is my pleasure to be here, Mike.

Mike:
Denise, as you’re raising your five boys, how do you approach your role as wife and mother?

Denise:
Well, Mike, first of all I remind myself that I’m the mom and not the dad. I believe this is a foundational and critical issue as it relates to our sons. After serving in leadership in churches for nearly 30 years, and we find the feminization of our culture to be a huge problem in our nation. Women tend to dominate and assume a role they were not created to play in the home. It troubles us greatly because of its far-reaching effects in society. Now let me hasten to say that women are equal in value to men; but biblically we would agree that God has placed the man as the head of the home. It’s not about value, but about godly order and function. And as women, we can subtly usurp the place our husband should hold, and to me that diminishes his strength, lessens his impact, and ultimately can weaken the manly character of our boys. I try to live a life of respecting and honoring my husband, as ‘human’ as he might be some days and as much as I think I know better! Now I’m not a mouse and I’m free to express all God has put in me, but I do have a clear sphere under my husband, and I make every effort to yield to him as he attempts to lead.

Mike:
Well, thank you, Denise. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
