Let’s be honest—the costs of homeschooling go beyond the purchase of curriculum and notebooks. Join Mike Smith as he talks about some practical ways to cut everyday costs, today on Home School Heartbeat.
Mike Smith:
The everyday costs of living can be daunting, especially if your family has more than the national average of 1.5 children. Rhonda Maki faced that challenge when she was homeschooling her own children—all of whom have graduated. Now Rhonda is joining us to share some ideas for stretching your homeschool dollar. Welcome, Rhonda.
Rhonda Maki:
Thanks, Mike. Every mom knows groceries take a large portion of the monthly budget, but there are ways to cut costs. Many grocery stores offer discount prices on store brand and even name-brand products. And planning your menus for a week or a month in advance and shopping in bulk can also make a difference in your grocery bill.
Then if you find yourself identifying with taxi-mom syndrome, consider working out a carpool with other parents. Sharing the transportation responsibilities will free up time and resources.
Although homeschooling will likely mean that one parent can’t work a full-time job, there are still ways to lessen the financial strain. As the possibilities of the Internet expand, there are more and more opportunities for working from home on a flexible schedule. Think outside the box! Ultimately the key will be what works for you and your family.
Mike:
Thank you, Rhonda, for those great tips! And listeners, most of all, be encouraged by God’s faithfulness. Continue to walk forward in faith and trust in the ultimate provision that only God can give. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
