As homeschoolers and political activists, we should make it our priority to secure a parental rights amendment to the U.S. Constitution. There are two primary reasons that I say this.

First, homeschoolers, more than any other group in the nation, rely on a robust theory of parental rights. Our reason for existence as a movement is to protect the right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. If we don’t take the lead in protecting this right, who will?

Second, I believe this issue is winnable if we frame it like this: “The Supreme Court has said that parental rights are an implied right under our Constitution. Would you support a constitutional amendment that simply placed this same rule of parental rights into the actual text of the Constitution so that parental rights are not diminished by an increasingly liberal judiciary?”

If you poll that question today, the approval rating will be at least 75-80%. If you poll that question 10-20 years from now, support will diminish.

As we look back over our fight for homeschooling, we see incredible blessing on our efforts. God has protected the right of parents to raise and educate their children. With His blessing, we can fight this battle and win. Let’s not pass our work on to the next generation; let’s take our places to secure victory and freedom for families. I’m Mike Farris.
