Looking ahead to life after high school? Whether your student has decided on a career or not—college may not be on the horizon. On today’s Home School Heartbeat with Mike Smith, we'll discover some alternatives to the traditional four year degree. Mike Smith: There are many other ways for young adults to pursue their interests outside a traditional four-year college program: internships, apprenticeship, travel, a job. What are your children’s dreams? What are her interests? How has God gifted him? What are their goals? Career aptitude or personality assessments can help your child narrow down those interests and point him or her in the right direction. You can also help prepare your son or daughter for post-high school life by developing a plan for high school to complement long-term goals. If your daughter wants to be a photographer, explore her having apprenticeship with a professional. If your son wants to join the military, make sure he talks with recruiters and those serving in the armed forces. Investigate jobs and companies he or she might like to work for, noting any educational or job experience requirements for new hires. By encouraging your teen to explore his or her interests, you can help your teen make the right career choices after high school. Tomorrow, I’ll share some tips on how you and your student can explore alternatives to college. Until then, I’m Mike Smith. |
