Mike Smith:
Our guest on Home School Heartbeat is Dr. Jeff Myers, a professor at Bryan College and president of Passing the Baton International. Jeff, welcome to the program today.
Jeff Myers:
Thanks, Mike, it’s great to be with you.
Mike:
As a teacher and speaker, you have worked for years to provide leadership training tools to families. What would you say are the main characteristics of a culture-shaping leader?
Jeff:
Well, Mike, a culture-shaping leader is someone who makes a difference as a productive citizen, as a parent, as a member of the community, and so the culture leaders that I’ve studied do four things differently. First of all, they understand the times in which they live, so that they can think well. Second, they understand their God-given identity, instead of pursuing wealth and fame, which is what most people try to do. They seek to do what God has gifted them to do. The third thing is they swallow their fear so that they can communicate the truth with grace. And then finally, they work to have a positive influence on other people that changes things for the better. So when you think about it, you’ve got a person who’s thoughtful, authentic, gracious, and influential and that’s exactly the kind of person who makes a difference in the world.
Mike:
Well, Jeff, do you think that home education can help train these generation of leaders?
Jeff:
I have no doubt that homeschoolers will make up a large percentage of our nation’s future leaders.
Mike:
Well, I tell you what, we look forward to talking to you more about this next time, and until then, I’m Mike Smith.
