Do you ever feel like the world’s fastest juggler as you try to manage your household and your homeschool? Hear from someone who’s been there, on today’s Home School Heartbeat with Mike Smith.
Mike Smith:
Homeschool moms, I think this week’s program will be a great encouragement to you. Marilyn Rockett, who homeschooled three of her four sons for 15 years, is with us to talk about organization. She recently wrote a book called Homeschooling at the Speed of Life: Balancing Home, School, and Family in the Real World. Marilyn, we’re so glad you’ve joined us this week.
Marilyn Rockett:
Thank you, Mike, for inviting me.
Mike:
Homeschool moms have many balls to juggle between home, school, and family-but what do you think is the greatest challenge for moms?
Marilyn:
Mike, homeschool moms have an important job to educate their children while still managing our homes. A survey in recent years found that the most stress-inducing items for a homeschool mom were: number one, lack of organization, and number two, housework (which is related). Not the concerns you might expect about children learning, or choosing a curriculum, or “school” type things. Moms want to teach their children well, but they also want to balance school and home. I don’t like the popular term “time management.” But I know that moms who really desire to have a home that honors the Lord can learn to manage themselves better and learn the skills to manage their households while teaching their children. Chaos and disorganization disrupt our homes and make learning harder. Now, I don’t want moms to misunderstand - I’m not talking about a perfect home that can go on the cover of a magazine - but a home that, in my words, “is neat enough to be peaceful and messy enough to be happy.” We all can improve, and that’s what I’m encouraging moms to do.
Mike:
We’re looking forward to talking more with you about this topic, Marilyn. And until then, I’m Mike Smith.
