How can educational supplement classes help your homeschool? Listen in to today’s Home School Heartbeat, as Michael Farris interviews Michael Cordner about The Pillar Foundation’s resource center for homeschooling families.

Mike Farris:
My guest again today is Mike Cordner from the Pillar Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, a program of supplemental education for high school homeschool kids. Mike, what are the strengths of the programs that seek to supplement homeschooling with group programs and what are the weaknesses of these programs?

Mike Cordner:
Well, the strengths are that we can bring resources and people that are expert in various areas. We offer many courses. We offer seventeen or eighteen courses and they’re basically taught by people that are experts in that particular field. So the strength is that we bring a lot of expertise that the normal homeschooled parent is not able to offer. The weakness is that for this kind of course is that, and we do address this, is that we don’t want to be treated as a school. We don’t want parents to just think of us as being a school and start to pass some of the responsibility for educating their children over to us. We believe in homeschooling and we want that responsibility to stay with the parents and for that reason we limit the number of courses that any one student can take in a semester to three so that we’re not treated as a school.

Mike:
Thanks for being on the program. I’m Mike Farris.
