Our society often takes as role models people who are exceptionally smart, popular, or talented. But in your day-to-day lives, moms, you can learn a lot from the ones society often overlooks: children. Join Mike Smith on Home School Heartbeat as he explains this further.

Mike Smith:
Homeschool moms, in your role as parent and teacher, you probably spend a lot of time thinking about the lessons you need to teach your children—how to do the dishes properly, how to show respect, and how to read and write. As you focus on training your children, it’s easy to overlook the fact that your children can also teach you many important lessons.

Jesus once told his disciples that “whosoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child shall not enter it” (Mark 10:15). By observing our children, we can learn important truths about our relationship with God.

How many times have you watched a child copy his mom or dad? We have a role model in our own lives, too—Jesus Christ. When we read the Bible, it should be second nature to imitate the example Jesus set for us, both in word and in deed. Just as our children mature through imitating us, we become mature Christians through imitating Christ.

Children can also teach us a lot about trust. They don’t have to be taught that they can rely on mom and dad to take care of them—it just comes naturally. In the same way, we should trust God to take care of our most basic needs or our biggest problems, since He loves us like a father.

As you watch for the many lessons your children teach you about life, you will gain a new perspective on your role as mother.

And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
