How Does It Work?

Does homeschooling seem impossible for your family because you must work full-time? On this edition of Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith interviews one mom about how she met this challenge.

Mike Smith:
With us today is Liz Curry, who’s been homeschooling for 11 years. Liz, could you share one or two tips for parents who are juggling work and homeschooling all at the same time?

Liz Curry:
One of the first things I did was I contacted my family, pastor, friends, and I asked them, would they help me to mentor my children, would they be part of my transportation system, would they be part of my childcare system, and just any other area I could think of? And so I always recommend, don’t try to go it by yourself. And the second thing that I would do as a single homeschool mom is delegate. Remember to delegate. Sometimes we as women, we want to do the whole thing, but if you delegate, you’ll lower your risk of getting burned out. Reach out—the community is there, and if you ask, a lot of times people will say, “Sure, I’ll help you.”

Mike:
Liz, thank you for sharing those great tips. Next time, we’re going to talk about a very important subject, and that’s money. How do single parents—or even homeschoolers, that is—on a limited budget, how are we able to homeschool? So please tune in next time. And until then, I’m Mike Smith.
