What’s so urgent about praying for our nation? Find out on today’s Home School Heartbeat, with Michael Farris and National Day of Prayer Task Force Chairman Shirley Dobson.

Michael Farris:
Shirley, the theme of this year’s National Day of Prayer is “America, Unite in Prayer.” Can you explain the significance of this theme?

Shirley Dobson:
Well, every year, Mike, I go before the Lord when I’m contemplating the theme, and I try to find out what’s on His heart, and I really pray about it. And I feel that this year’s theme, “America, Unite in Prayer,” was given right from His heart, because we are a very polarized and divided nation at this time. And I base that on II Chronicles 7:14, which says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” And if you look at that Scripture, there’s four keys to healing our land: humility, prayer, seeking God, and repentance. And we all know that America needs God’s healing intervention at this pivotal point in history. Whether it’s the ongoing threat of terrorism, like I said before, or the continued erosion of the moral and biblical principles upon which this great country was founded, the challenges facing us are just so great, and we have to be on our knees in prayer.
