How can a family continue to homeschool in the face of financial challenges? They need the support of the homeschool community. This week on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith and his guest highlight an organization that’s helping to provide this support.

Mike Smith:
Our guest this week is my beautiful and lovely wife, Elizabeth. She’s the director of development at the Home School Foundation. I’m glad you could join us.

Elizabeth Smith:
Thank you very much. It’s great to be here; I can’t wait to tell you more about the Home School Foundation.

Mike:
To start with, Elizabeth, could you explain what the Home School Foundation does?

Elizabeth:
Well, the short answer is that we help needy families, but that includes reaching out to widows, single parents, children with special needs; we also step in and help meet the needs of people who are experiencing temporary financial crisis. During the Hurricane Katrina season, we worked with a number of families to replace curriculum and help them get back on their feet. Whenever there is a major crisis in the family of a homeschooler, we try to be there for them if they need us.

The mission of the Home School Foundation is to promote homeschooling, preserve parental freedoms, support likeminded organizations, as well as our emphasis on helping needy families. And so with that in mind, we respond to a number of needs, like international homeschooling—places where homeschooling isn’t legal yet, we’re able to come in, perhaps pay for attorney’s fees or cover fines that have been placed on families who have come under scrutiny by their local governments.

Mike:
Well, thank you, Elizabeth. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
