Does your family doctor understand your choice to homeschool? Get some pointers from Rodger Sayre, a family physician and homeschool dad, on today’s Home School Heartbeat with Mike Smith. Mike Smith: Dr. Rodger Sayre: If a patient is suspicious of me, I’m likely to be suspicious of them. On the other hand, if I sense an attitude of thankfulness and respect, more than likely the feeling will be mutual. I know this sounds almost too simplistic, but if a patient wants their doctor to trust and respect them, they have to demonstrate that same attitude toward their doctor. Now I’m not suggesting, Mike, that people should put on a show, or be plastic in this regard. If someone has a problem being genuine in their respect or trust for their doctor, there's a problem that must be addressed in that relationship. Lastly, I would suggest that discussions regarding educational choices be kept as non-confrontational as possible. I would advise parents to listen politely to the physician’s concerns, and then address them, using evidence to back up their arguments. Most importantly, we must avoid the temptation of attacking the individual instead of the issue. Remember, the relationship should be paramount in all our dealings with others. Mike: |
