Please note: Today’s program is a rerun that first aired on April 24, 2000.

Join us this week on Home School Heartbeat as Vickie Farris talks with her husband, Home School Legal Defense Association Chairman and General Counsel Michael Farris, about her book, A Mom Just Like You.

Michael Farris:
Vickie, you've written a book called A Mom Just Like You, and your first chapter is called “Dispelling the Myth of Super Mom.” I know a lot of women are saying, “Vickie, you’ve got 10 kids, you’ve been homeschooling for 18 years, you are really not just like me. You’re one of those super moms that I hear about.”

I know, Vickie, that you consider yourself to have been an unlikely candidate to even begin homeschooling, much less write a book. Tell us about your background and why you consider yourself to be an unlikely candidate for what you’re doing.

Vickie Farris:
Well, first of all, I was an only child, and I was somewhat spoiled. I was also much more of a tomboy when I was growing up, than I was domestically inclined. I didn’t know how to cook when we got married, and I didn’t know how to sew—I still don’t know how to sew. I was very scared of handling small babies, because I had not really been around them very much. And I really had no idea how to manage a large family, much less how to homeschool them at the same time.

A Mom Just Like You

by
Vickie Farris and Jayme Farris

How did a busy mom with 10 kids have the time to write a book? She didn’t. Vickie Farris’ daughter, Jayme, wrote it with her. In a warm, practical style, Farris gives homeschooling moms encouragement for those days when the challenge seems overwhelming, and shares her insights gleaned from years of experience. Hey Mom, you can do it!
