One of the most valuable resources for every homeschool family today is the Internet, providing a virtually unlimited wealth of information at your fingertips. Research projects that used to require multiple trips to the library or the purchase of expensive books can often be conducted without cost through Internet resources. The Internet also allows you to track down field trip destinations or community activities that can enhance your homeschool program.

Apart from its educational possibilities, the Internet can help you find ways to cut costs. Numerous sellers offer used or discounted books. Auction and public market sites offer used items of every variety, and often you can purchase new items through the same sites at discount prices.

If you don’t have the Internet at home, you can usually get free access at your local library. Like the Internet, the library also provides a wealth of resources in a single location. Research sources will be an asset to your student in completing school projects. How-to manuals may help your students discover a new hobby. Your library may have resources to help your students work through an independent study of subjects such as languages or music. Or, take advantage of the educational events your library offers, such as musical performances and storybook readings.

Consider how these two resources—the Internet and the library—could help your family cut down on costs and add value to your homeschool program.
