Telling Their Stories
Volume 73, Program 15

Celebrate the men and women who have served our country overseas. Today, Home School Heartbeat’s Mike Smith talks with homeschooled high schooler Nicholas Rider about honoring America’s veterans.

Mike Smith:
Nicholas, your book, America’s True Heroes, shares the stories of veterans who served in the world wars, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. Why is it so important to tell the stories of those who have sacrificed for our country?

Nicholas Rider:
Well, Mr. Smith, I wrote America’s True Heroes for several reasons. First, as a thank-you to all veterans for the sacrifices and contributions they have made to serve our great country. Second, to raise awareness and the appreciation of all Americans of what our veterans in active duty have done. Last, to bridge the generations. It is so important that our brave heroes’ stories and experiences are not forgotten, because every contribution—be it large or small—is a part of our American heritage. The freedoms that we enjoy today are the work of those who have strived, struggled, and sometimes died for what we have here in America. We should not forget what they have done for us. It is so important that these stories are recorded for the generations to come. I think all veterans deserve our thanks, and this is just my way of doing that.

Mike:
Nicholas, I agree with you. Are you going to serve in the military when you’re old enough?

Nicholas:
Yes—if our country really needs it, I’ll be happy to serve.

Mike:
It’s been great having you on the program. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
