As homeschoolers, we test our children to make sure they are gaining academic knowledge, but we may not pay such careful attention to whether or not they are gaining spiritual knowledge. Join Mike Farris as he discusses this problem with his guest, Rev. Henry Reyenga, on Home School Heartbeat.
Michael Farris:
I think there might be the idea out there that if we’re homeschooling, our kids are automatically discipled. Henry, what would you say about that—can we count on home discipleship just happening?
Rev. Henry Reyenga:
So much of home discipleship does just happen when you homeschool. Your children can see your heart walk; they see what I call in my book your “familiar walk,” and a strong familiar walk is a powerful witness. Your children do see it. Yet don’t forget that your familiar walk needs grounding in intentional practices of home discipleship. So you need an intentional walk, as well, in discipling your children. This walk is a consistent time of home discipleship. Your home discipleship will give strength, direction, and renewal back to your family and back to their familiar walks as well as your own. And your walk even becomes more powerful. My wife Pam and I—one of the things we do is lead our family in five minutes of Scripture memory. By the time our children are out of the house, hundreds of verses will be buried in their heart that they might not sin against God, making practical Psalm 119:11.
Mike:
Listeners, join us next time as we look at some practical ways to successfully incorporate these ideas into our own lives. I’m Mike Farris.
