Are people today passionate about the important things in life? Michael Farris talks with Zan Tyler about the cultural climate for nurturing close relationships, on today’s Home School Heartbeat.

Michael Farris:
Zan, it seems like families in the world today are bombarded with opportunities to get out, to get away from each other, do their own thing. Has this attitude affected the Christian community as well?

Zan Tyler:
Mike, I think absolutely as Christians we have been affected by this. And so I think we need to intentionally make our homes a center of service, a center of worship, a center of learning. And we need to work on that together.

Today’s society is backwards; we’re passionate towards our job and material security, and we’re much more nonchalant about family relationships. So we focus on careers and what they can provide at the expense of our relationships with God and with each other.

And I think what we can do to avoid that, is as we are going, as we are making disciples, we teach our children how to be busy with us so that we’re not going in a hundred different directions. We’re serving together, we’re learning together, we’re worshiping together, and we’re accomplishing together.

Mike:
Zan, I really appreciate your words. While dads certainly have a responsibility in this whole emotional arena, moms have the special opportunity, as you said earlier in the week, to really provide an emotional foundation for their family relationships. And I just want to encourage you to keep on encouraging moms in that direction. I’m Mike Farris.
