Making Good Relationships a Priority

What does the Bible have to say about family relationships? Tune in as Michael Farris talks with Zan Tyler on today’s Home School Heartbeat.

Michael Farris:
Zan, I’d like to explore with you the idea this week about building biblical relationships in our homes. How do we go about doing that?

Zan Tyler:
Mike, I think as always, Jesus sets the standard for everything, and relationships are no exception. In the verse in Revelation 3:16, he says, “So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth” (New American Standard Bible). This is not the standard verse that usually comes to mind when we think of our spouses or our children.

But Jesus is telling us that he does not want us to be neutral or nonchalant towards Him. He wants us to be responsive, interactive, and passionate. In the same way, I think we need to take that same standard and apply it towards our children and our spouses. We must be interactive and responsive and passionate with them.

I think if we make as our goal the nurturing of healthy relationships a priority, then our children will naturally achieve and do well. On the other hand, if we make achievement our goal, then I think our relationships will suffer.

Mike:
Zan, that’s a lot of common sense. I really appreciate your encouragement to make good relationships a priority in our homes. I’m Mike Farris.
