How much do you know about the early years of our country? Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Farris and his guest, Michael Quinn, discuss a resource that can help you learn more—a history text called Why America Is Free.

Mike Farris:
Can you tell our listeners a little about how the book portrays the character and integrity of George Washington?

Michael Quinn:
It addresses it very forthrightly, and it’s not ashamed at all to point to him as an exemplar and a role model. Washington was effective as a leader in that time simply because he brought such outstanding values to the challenges.

Now there’s no question he was faced with remarkable challenges, but he faced all of them with a sense of integrity, a sense of responsibility and honesty that really gained him the respect and admiration of everyone around him. A lot of what he exemplified—the importance of the rule of law, the service to country, the sense of patriotism—are really incorporated into our whole system of American democracy. Those are the responsibilities of the individual in our society, and Washington is a very effective role model in teaching those lessons and the importance of those attributes and values.

Mike Farris:
I commend the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and the Society of Cincinnati for a tremendous book. Thank you very much for being on our program.

Michael Quinn:
It’s been a pleasure, Mike.
