Today on Home School Heartbeat, Home School Legal Defense Association Chairman and General Counsel Michael Farris highlights a remarkable history text that explains the roots of American freedom. Michael Farris: The account of Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty” speech includes little-known dramatic details of Henry’s physical presentation that not only brings the scene to life, but also helps to explain why the public responded so strongly. George Washington and other historical persons are shown having religious faith that plays a significant role in shaping their public character and private morality. The Founding Fathers’ reliance on God’s protection as recited in the Declaration of Independence is noted with appropriate emphasis. Though not a religious book, this text clearly and unashamedly promotes good character. Although children reading on their own will find this book entertaining, with its interesting writing and beautiful color illustrations, I plan on reading this entire hardcover book aloud to my children. I sincerely hope that homeschoolers are not the only ones who discover this book. All children need the knowledge of our history and the character of our Founding Fathers if America is to remain free. I’m Michael Farris. |
