One disease that plagues modern education is the revisionist history so often found in public school textbooks. Today on Home School Heartbeat, host Michael Farris offers parents a history that is rich in historical fact, not historical fiction. Michael Farris: Many people today have confused ideas about our freedom and how we became a free people. Few things could do more to straighten out the political confusion of our own times than reading this book about the past. Why America Is Free is a remarkable history book aimed at children from 4th through 8th grades which focuses on the critical founding years of 1750 to 1800. Most adults would find their knowledge of history and freedom materially enhanced by this well-written work. I first encountered this book through my position as a member of the board of visitors for President George Washington’s Mount Vernon home. This text, which is published by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, is decisively patriotic, without overlooking shortcomings, like slavery, which were present in the Founding Fathers’ generation. Importantly, the mistakes of the past are given less attention than the numerous positive achievements of the Founders. Although Why America Is Free approaches history from a secular perspective, its treatment of our nation’s religious heritage is remarkably refreshing. I encourage you again to enrich your family’s understanding of the story of American freedom with this excellent book. I’m Michael Farris. |
