Joe, welcome to Home School Heartbeat.

Joe Holman:
Thank you, Mike. It’s great to be here.

Mike:
Joe, what would you say to the mom who is so excited about homeschooling—she feels that God’s calling her to do this—but her husband is dead set against it?

Joe:
You know, one of the first things I would do is encourage her, because this is pretty normal. Moms spend a lot more time with their kids and in a heart-to-heart relationship with them than with others, and sometimes God speaks through the mom about the children and then it goes up to the husband.

What I would really encourage her to do is to trust in the Lord, to not nag or complain to her husband but to joyfully submit to his leadership, realizing that when God brought a man and a woman together, out of two people he made one flesh, and God places an emphasis on unity and on harmony in the marriage. And what she needs to do—and I think it may be the very most important homeschooling lesson that God has for her as the future teacher—and that is to walk by faith, to trust that God is going to work in this and that he will lead the husband in the same direction that he led her. She needs to remember that unity is more important than a unit study.
