How can we prepare our daughters for life? Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA Chairman and General Counsel Michael Farris suggests one answer from his perspective as the father of six girls. Michael Farris: The church my family attends was blessed with two women who were trained as nurses before they were married. When they moved into our area, they were already homeschooling large families, but God used their earlier training and expertise to bless not only their own families, but our church body as well. They gave countless hours of help, from advice about small stuff (like, is it a sprain or a break?) all the way to serving some families in our church who suffered terminal illnesses. Not only did these women receive training that would allow them to support themselves financially if necessary, but their training also made them powerful tools in God’s hands. While it’s certainly ideal for a woman to marry and have children, not every woman will do so. And for those women who do, some women’s lives may hold widowhood and what I call pragmatic widowhood—that is, husbands who break their vows and abandon their families. Married or single, many women find themselves in situations where they’re forced to earn a living. Preparing our daughters for life means providing them with a solid academic education, and equipping them for whatever task God sends their way. I’m Mike Farris. |
